Certified SCAMPI℠ Lead Appraiser (CMMI® for Development)
Organizations around the world work diligently to achieve performance excellence based on CMMI’s benchmark practices. When they are ready to measure their accomplishments against the CMMI, they call a Lead Appraiser to determine their capability or maturity level.
CMMI Institute-certified Lead Appraisers work with thousands of organizations to confirm and publicize their accomplishments using the Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI).
CMMI Institute-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraisers (SCAMPI LAs) lead trained teams of professionals in the appraisal of one or more CMMI process areas (using information collected from presentations, documents, and interviews) to determine an organization’s process capability and/or maturity level.
Whether working inside an organization as a Team Leader or as an external Lead Appraiser, CMMI appraisers serve a vital role to maintaining the vitality of CMMI-based improvement.

Discipline Area Experience and Skills
The candidate must have at least 10 years of project management and engineering experience in systems or software. At least two of these years must include management of technical personnel. Appraisal Experience and Skills
The CMMI Institute must have a record of the candidate’s participation as an appraisal team member on at least two SCAMPI A appraisals, or one SCAMPI A appraisal and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals, within 24 months prior to desired training. You must successfully complete a scenario-based written exercise before advancing to the next step in the certification process. Your completed written exercise should be sent to the CMMI Institute for evaluation. Candidates whose exercise evaluation is not satisfactory will receive directions for their next steps.
Candidates must successfully complete the five-day SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course.*
The CMMI Institute conducts the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training for a limited number of candidates per offering. Due to these enrollment requirements, organizations that sponsor only one candidate may have to wait an unspecified period of time before the candidate can enroll in a course with the appropriate number of participants. Organizations may arrange an on-site offering of the course if they are able to meet enrollment requirements by contacting email@example.com.
*Certified appraisers who have already attended SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training do not need to retake the course for this certification.
After successfully completing the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course, you can register for the SCAMPI LA for Development qualification exam by contacting the CMMI Institute at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule your exam.
After you have registered on NetExam, you will need to create an account in ProctorU to schedule for the exam. We recommend that you complete the exam at least 60 days prior to your observation as outlined in step 6. You may take the exam at home or any other location of your choice for a fee of $250. You may retake the exam for a maximum of three times, each for a fee of $250.
The SCAMPI LA exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions that deal with SCAMPI planning and implementation. You must answer at least 80% of these questions correctly. You will be allotted 2 hours to complete the closed-book exam.
Within 12 months of successfully completing SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training, you must demonstrate the ability to successfully lead a SCAMPI A appraisal according to the following guidelines.*

- Only one candidate SCAMPI Lead Appraiser can be observed per appraisal
- If an interpreter is required, the candidate’s organization is responsible for obtaining, and providing payment of, a CMMI Institute-approved interpreter
The observer will provide you with feedback at the conclusion of the observation and will provide the required information to the CMMI Institute for your candidate observation package.
If you pass your observation, the CMMI Institute will notify you of your status as a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser and will provide you with a certification diploma. For observations that are unsatisfactory, the CMMI Institute will provide feedback and, if necessary, steps for remediation. Any additional CMMI Institute support for remedial work may be billed in accordance with Partner Network pricing.
