Acquisition Supplement for CMMI for Development V1.3

This one-day course introduces acquisition managers and practitioners, appraisal team members, and process group (e.g., SEPG, EPG) members to CMMI fundamental concepts related to acquisition. CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ) is a CMMI model designed for use in managing a supply chain by those who acquire, procure, or otherwise select and purchase products and services for business purposes. This CMMI model focuses on acquirer processes and contains best practices that address activities for initiating and managing the acquisition of products and services that meet the needs of the customer. Types of acquisitions that benefit from using CMMI-ACQ include government acquisition, supply chain management, procurement, and outsourcing. The course is composed of lectures and class exercises with ample opportunity for student questions and discussions. After attending the course, students will be able to describe the CMMI-ACQ model, discuss the model’s process areas, and locate relevant information in the model.

CMMI Instructor Training

This three-day course prepares and qualifies professionals to to teach an Introduction to CMMI course. This  course reviews the details, format, and methodologies required to facilitate the Introduction to CMMI course. The Instructor Training course is composed of lectures, exercises, candidate presentations, and work assignments that are completed before and during the week the course is offered. Each of the three CMMI constellations will be discussed during the course. While Candidates will be exposed to all three CMMI constellations, your individual certification will focus on a single CMMI Instructor certification. Successful completion of this course requires the student to attain a passing score on the following elements:

  • participation and teamwork
  • presentation  and communication skills
  • facilitation and listening skills
  • course assignments and in-class activities
  • knowledge of the CMMI model and structure.

To become a candidate, individuals must qualify for the applicable Instructor certification program and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the applicable CMMI model as well as experience in teaching. Development Supplement for CMMI for Services

If you’ve taken the Introduction to CMMI for Services course and you want to learn more about development, this course is for you. This one-day course introduces you to the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) model, which describes effective practices for developing quality products for customers and end users. The course is composed primarily of class exercises, discussion, and presentations. After attending the course, you will be able to describe the CMMI-DEV model, discuss the model’s process areas, and locate information in the model. This course, combined with the Introduction to CMMI for Services, fulfills the prerequisite for any course or role requiring an official introductory CMMI for Development course. It is designed for professionals who have already taken Introduction to CMMI for Services. A three-day Introduction to CMMI for Development course is also available for individuals who have not yet taken an introductory course.

  • explain how CMMI-DEV can help a development or service organization to improve its development processes
  • describe the unique elements of CMMI-DEV compared to CMMI-SVC

Intermediate Concepts of CMMI

This five-day course introduces candidate SCAMPI Lead Appraisers, candidate CMMI Instructors, CMMI managers, systems and software engineers, quality assurance specialists, engineering process group (e.g., EPG, SEPG) members, and others to CMMI concepts, including the relationships among CMMI model components. The course is composed of  pre-class assignments, class lectures, student presentations, and class exercises all presented in a learner-centered style. The materials review the interrelationships among CMMI model components (e.g., practices, goals, and process areas), interpret CMMI practices, and apply the CMMI model to  improve performance and processes in organizations. Successful completion of this course requires the student to attain a passing score on two elements:

  • an end-of-course examination that covers CMMI model knowledge and the concepts taught in this course
  • student participation, presentation skills, and communication skills from his or her pre-course assignment and in-class activities.

The course will concentrate on CMMI for Development, however, it will also review core components of the CMMI for Services and CMMI for Acquisition constellations as well.

Intermediate Concepts of People CMM

This five-day course introduces attendees to detailed People CMM concepts, including the relationships among People CMM model components. The People CMM is a framework that organizations can use to help improve their ability to ensure that their staff members have the competencies to achieve an organization’s current and future business objectives. The course is composed of mandatory pre-class assignments, class lectures, class exercises and an exam, and is presented in a facilitative style designed to create dialog among participants and instructors. This style of interaction is designed to help prepare participants to determine the adequacy of their organization’s implementation of the People CMM process areas. After attending, participants will have a deep understanding of the People CMM. Those successfully completing the course will be able to use the People CMM to develop an effective process improvement program for their workforce practices. Further, they will be able to interpret their experiences using other process improvement models to apply to People CMM process improvement. Successful completion of this course requires the student to attain a passing score of 80% or better on a written, closed book examination that covers People CMM model knowledge and the concepts taught in this course. This course is a prerequisite for SCAMPI with People CMM Lead Appraiser Training and Introduction to People CMM Instructor Training. Instructors will evaluate and document each student’s participation and presentation/communication skills through their pre-course assignment and in-class activities. This information will be retained by the SEI as an aid to further training that the student may undertake. The instructors will debrief each student by discussing this evaluation at the completion of the class if requested by the student.

This three-day course introduces managers and practitioners, appraisal team members, and process improvement teams to CMMI fundamental concepts. The CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) model is a tool that helps organizations to improve their ability to develop and maintain quality products and services. The course is composed of lectures and class exercises with ample opportunity for participant questions and discussions. After attending the course, participants will be able to describe the components of the CMMI-DEV model and their relationships, discuss the process areas in the CMMI-DEV model, and locate relevant information in the model. Successful completion of this course requires that participants actively participate in classroom discussions and exercises in all three days, not missing any classroom time.  This course fulfills a prerequisite requirement for many courses requiring an official SEI Introductory CMMI course (e.g., Intermediate Concepts of CMMI, CMMI Level 2 for Practitioner, CMMI Level 3 for Practitioners, SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training, and Understanding CMMI High Maturity Practices). Introduction to the People CMM

This three-day course introduces those who are involved in improving workforce management practices or managing technical professionals to the People Capability Maturity Model (People CMM), Version 2.0, its fundamental concepts, and the value it can bring to organizations using it. The People CMM is a framework that organizations can use to attract, motivate, and retain talented technical staff. The practices in the model help an organization be an employer of choice and ensure that the staff has the competencies and capabilities to achieve an organization’s current and future business objectives. People CMM Instructor Training

This three-day course introduces those interested in becoming SEI-authorized Introduction to People CMM Version 2.0 course instructors to details of the People CMM and the Introduction to People CMM Version 2.0 course. The candidate instructors must have an evident in-depth understanding of People CMM as well as effective teaching and facilitation skills to satisfactorily complete this course. The course is composed of lectures, participant presentation of Introduction to People CMM Version 2.0 course material, and work assignments that are completed before and during the week the course is offered. After successfully completing the course, participants will qualify as candidate Introduction to People CMM Version 2.0 course instructors. To become authorized, candidate instructors must be observed by a qualified observing instructor and receive a satisfactory evaluation. Authorized instructors may teach the Introduction to People CMM Version 2.0 course within their own organizations or in other organizations, depending on their sponsoring organization’s license agreement with the SEI. This course is a prerequisite for becoming an SEI-authorized Introduction to People CMM V 2.0 Instructor.

SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training

This five-day course prepares participants to become SCAMPI lead appraisers by introducing participants to the concepts and details of the SCAMPI method. After attending the course, participants will qualify as candidate SCAMPI lead appraisers.The SCAMPI method is a diagnostic tool that supports, enables, and encourages an organization’s commitment to process improvement. The method helps organizations gain insight into their process capability or organizational maturity by identifying process strengths and weaknesses as related to the practices of one or more appraisal reference models (e.g., CMMI). The SCAMPI method can also support other reference models. SCAMPI A V1.3 is the method of choice for benchmarking and is therefore defined by the Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC) V1.3 as a Class A appraisal method. The first component of SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training (SLAT) is an extensive computer-based training class which is a prerequisite to both the out of classroom assignment as well as the in-class instruction and mentoring component. Skills and knowledge acquired from the computer-based training will help students to better prepare their out of classroom assignments. This training will check student knowledge of concepts to be reviewed in the classroom and their performance will help instructors identify areas to emphasize during in-class instruction. Students will also be provided with an out of class assignment. Assignments are to be completed in advance of the in-class instruction and will serve as input to the hands-on exercises introduced in the classroom. These assignments are designed to develop important skills and capabilities.

Prerequisites

Before registration for this course is approved, participants must have submitted a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser certification application along with the respective documents required to enter the program. These include:

  • having acquired sponsorship from a CMMI Institute Partner for SCAMPI appraisal services
  • having submitted a signed the CMMI Institute Code of Professional Conduct
  • having certain education and experience such as:
      • participation as an appraisal team member on at least two SCAMPI A appraisals or on one SCAMPI A appraisal and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals within the 24 months prior to attending the course
      • experience relevant to the domain for which certification is sought
      • an advanced degree in a related technical area or equivalent experience
      • have successfully completed the  Introduction to CMMI course and applicable CMMI upgrades as necessary
      • have successfully completed the  Intermediate Concepts of CMMI course

SCAMPI with People CMM Lead Appraiser Training

This five-day course introduces those interested in becoming authorized SCAMPI A with People CMM lead appraisers to the Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) method V1.2. The SCAMPI A method is a diagnostic tool that supports, enables, and encourages an organization’s commitment to process improvement. The method helps organizations gain insight into their process capability or organizational maturity by identifying process strengths and weaknesses as related to the best practices of the People CMM. SCAMPI A V1.2 is the method of choice for benchmarking against the People CMM model and is therefore defined by the Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC) V1.2 as a Class A appraisal method. The course is composed of lectures and hands-on exercises as well as work assignments to be completed before and during the week the course is offered. A final exam, work assignments, and class participation determine if participants successfully complete the course. After attending the course, participants will qualify as candidate SCAMPI with People CMM lead appraisers. To become an authorized, candidate SCAMPI with People CMM lead appraisers must be observed by a qualified observing lead appraiser and receive a satisfactory recommendation. Lead appraisers may provide appraisal services for their own organization or other organizations and deliver appraisal training to appraisal teams.   • have a signed Code of Professional Conduct for SEI Services in place
  • have successfully completed the authorization process to become a SCAMPI with People CMM Lead Appraiser that consists of:
    • participation as an appraisal team member on at least one SCAMPI A appraisal with People CMM or on one SCAMPI A with CMMI appraisal and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals within the prior 24 months
    • at least ten years of project management and engineering experience in systems, software engineering, or human resources and organizational development
    • a minimum of two years of experience managing technical personnel
    • an advanced degree in a related technical or business area or have equivalent experience
